Game Drawings

Here is a few character sketches. I wanted to go for a small, kind of happy minor. Becuase when I think of a minor what comes to mind is a small, fat, happy little man with a kind of dwarf feel to it. Whenever I think of it a dwarf pretty much comes to mind, so Ive tried to addapt that into my character. Also I wanted to go for a similar design to the people out of a game I used to play called 'The Settlers 7' the game is a stratagy based and graphically intensive.

Here is a first little sketch of what my game is going to roughly look like. The game is about catching all the little gold pieces burried in the ground. Im not sure yet whether to give it a time limit, or to have some sort of monster/ pixie/ bug kind of thing which will try and stop you from getting the gold pieces.

Settlers 7

Settlers 7 is a strategy game where you have to build up your empire from the ground up to fight off your enemys. The objective of the game is to capture something called victory points which are located all around the map, or you defeat your oponent.

A lot my games ideas have come from this game because I really like the way this game looks, even though its cartoony it still looks really nice. Also I relly like how the characters look in this game, so Ive tried to adapt that into my characters.

Game Screens
Here is a main menu I put together using photoshop. I got a photo of a tin mine from google because there were no mines where we were taking photos. I then applied the palette knife filter to make it more like a painting. I think made the titles using the text tool, then underneath the text I placed a rectangle then used a bevel on it.

Here is a slightly more developed game screen. I waneted to work more on the tunnel as well as the outside. so i tried to put some sort of light inside the tunnel to make it a little more interesting, I also might try to put some more detail in the layers of the earth. But my main objective for the game is to collect all the coins and place them in the cart before the time runs out. When they've all been collected the player will then advance to the next level.

Here is some level design ive been working on. I wanted to try and take the player deaper into the cave and explore some more of whats underground and maybe have the ending where the player leaves the mine.

Artist Research

Andy warhol was an americanartist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that flourished by the 1960's.

This is one of Andy Warhols famous pieces.

Before Warhol got into popart, what he was famous for, he discovered 'Blotted Line'. While he was at college he dicovered this technique and later used it for most of his work. It involves taping two pieces of paper together and palcing some ink on one page, then before it dries, push the two pieces together. The result was a picture with irregular lines which he would colour in with water colour.

It wasnt until later on in his career that he decided to try and do pop art. Pop art is mostly realistic renditions of everyday items. Least it was around the 1960's. At first Warol didnt know what to paint and found it a bit of a struggle. He began doing coke bottles and comic strips but he found his work wasnt getting enough attension. In December 1961 Warhol paid $50 to a friend of his who had told him she had a good idea. Her idea was for him to paint what he liked most in this world, whether it be money or a can of soup. Warhol did both.

Probably the most famous pieces if his work.

"Because I used to drink it. I used to have the same lunch every day, for twenty years, I guess, the same thing over and over again. Someone said my life has dominated me; I liked that idea"

Here is an image I made in photoshop using the same style as Andy warhol. To do this I used the cut out filter to give it that print kind of look.

Original

Here is a better version of an image in the same style as Andy Warhol. With this I applied the cutout filter again and a little of the pallette knife filter. I also changed the hue and saturation because I saw in a lot of Andy's images that his wernt the original colour.

Demos

Learning Outcome 3

This sign gives its purpose really well by giving it a blue solid colour background then making the actual image a white lined vector. Also it made the glasses block colour too so that it indicates what its message is, which is to use eye protection. Another way it makes this obvious is by not putting any facial features on the facew but only the glasses, and it says below the image 'eye protection must be worn'.

I dont think the message of this sign gets across very well because it doesnt have a very good picture. Although it says 'Caution Hot' the picture doesnt indicate that it is, it just has a warning sign. But the colours used are good because the yellow background makes the black tick lined vector stand out.

I think this sign puts across its point well because, although the symbol isnt an electric bolt, its still in the shape of one and if someone see's this they will instantly think its electric. Also it says in big
black text 'Danger' then beneath 'Electric shock risk'. Again the sign stands out because of its yellow
background.

I think this would be a good sign to use in my game, or make somethign sinilar, because as its based inside mines and caves there could be a danger of falling rocks, so its the right place for a sign like this to be in. This sign puts its message across really easily because everyone can make out what it is as soon as they see it. Also the red outline also helps catch peoples eye and soon as they see the red they know its a danger sign.

This is another sign I could use in my game, because its a warning/ danger sign which would be good since im basing my game in mines and tunnels. In general this sign puts its message across because most people will reconise the symbol as a warning symbol, also the red outline shows its a warning, because red is a colour of danger.

Task 7 - close ups

Here is a close up of a beetle I tried to draw, I did this because I really liked all the different colour relections on the beetles shell, so I thouhgt it would look really cool if I did a close up of it. Its not really that detailed because I didnt want to spend so long on it.
Here is a close up of part of the beetles back. I chose this part because the lighting on his shell looked really nice. Also the way all the different shades of colours met and blend together gave a really nice effect and really catch your eye.
Here is a super close up of part of  the beetles head. I chose this part because the colours looked really nice, shiny and really catch your eye. I thought the blending of the multiple colours looked really nice too, like a mix of warm and cold colours.

Original Image of Beetle.

Original Cateye, On the drawing I chose to do a closer view.
Here is the animal i decided to draw, Its a close up of a cats eye. I did this because I really liked the colour and detail of the eye, also the colour thats going on around it.
Here is a super close up of part of the cats fur, I did this because again, I really liked the colours also I liked how part of it was out of focus and another part was in focus, I think this gave a really good effect. Also the black background made it stand out.

Here is the final close up of the cat, I decided to do a different cat eye because I didnt know what else to draw on the other one as it was just its face. I dont really like this close up drawing because it doesnt seem as detailed as the other one, also it seems to be quite a bit blurry and a little fake.

This is the flower I decided to draw. I did this because i really liked the colours of the flower, and the fact that only half the flower is in focus. I think as the background is so blurred and out of focus it makes the flower stand out much, much more, this gives a very good effect and draws your eye straight to the image.

Below are my images:

Here is the super close up of the flower, I did this because I really liked the way the colours join together at this point of the flower, I think the mix between the light and dark shades of purple to the white catch your eye really well.

Here is the other close up of a flower. I decided to do a different one because I didnt think there was much left to do on the other one, also I really liked this image because of the really soft shading and pinky orange colour. I think it tricks your eye slightly aswel making the image seem a lot closer than what it really is. Also the shading in the centre is more sharper making that look like the point of focus.

Task 6 - 4 manipulated images

Here is just a really quick and messy painting I did in photoshop, its a copy of the image next to it.

In this image I decided to try and bring the green out in it, because I think it stands out really well and gives a nice effect, also when i took the image i thought it was really green anyway, so i decided to increase it.

Here is the original image.
Here I decided to try and make an image look sort of cartoony. I did this by using the cutout filter over the image. I chose this image because I think it would make a goof background or setting for a scene.

Here is the origjnal image, as you can see not much has been changed.
I think this image would be good for a scene in my game because I could use it as a dark, scary kind of woods. So I copied the same layer 3 times, made the middle one black and white then made the top layer into a layer mask, and then used a black and white gradient. I was trying to make the sky kind of less saturated and more focus on the dark, gloomy woods beneath the sky.

Here is the original.

On this image I tried to bring the green on the trees in the distance and give a sense of mystery, or maybe a dark and gloomy place. I think the blackness on the right makes the image a whole lot different, it gives it a really dark kind of feeling, maybe as if its in a fantasy world.

dartmoor photos

I like this because it makes whatever is in the light important by making everything else around it in the shadow.
I like this because i think it makes your eye look at the bottem right then follow up the river.
I like this because again it makes your eye follow the road and then makes you wonder what could be around the corner.
I think the hole in the wall where a little walk way has been made gives a good effect, and also could be used in the game concept as something.

Again this is another photo which makes you start thinking about whats over the other side.
I think this photo would be pretty good as a background or a setting for a level in the game. I think all the fallen trees, moss, and the fact the everything looks dead and lifeless gives a good effect.
i think this could be used as a concept painting, where my character could be climbing up this hill.
i think this gateway looks kinda mysterious, i could be used in a fantasy world. Also again it makes you think about 'what could be through that gateway'.
I think the grass looks pretty interesting in this photo because of how green it is, it makes it stand out. Or its the contrast between the light green and the dark colours.

I like this shot because because its another sence of mystery as to where the road leads.
I really liked this shot because i think the colours are really nice and the angle i took the photo at makes it look really cool.
I really like the colours in this photo, i think the grass and the lighting give a really good effect.
I think this photo also has a sence of mystery, I really like the spots where the sun breaks through and shows on the grass.
I took this photo because i thought i would be able to edit it in some way to make the tree into some kind of monster, because i thought the branches looked a little like arms.
I think i could use this seat for something to sit on, like one of my characters, or a cornish pixie maybe.
